Our Story

Our Mission. Your Food.

Pasture raised foods you can trust.
From a family farm, not a factory.

Our Mission

It is our mission to grow the highest quality, most nutrient dense pasture raised food that nourishes and heals our local community while enhancing the surrounding ecosystem. As Mennonites, the 3 core values of our Anabaptist faith directly guide how we farm.

  • Jesus is the center of our faith. We raise our animals the way our Creator designed them, living outside, free to express their natural instincts, and eating a species appropriate diet. They grow at their intended pace - nothing is ever rushed.
  • Community is the center of our life. For nearly 30 years, our regenerative farming methods have sequestered carbon, built deep layers of topsoil, and ensured clean water in our pristine creeks. Not only do these methods create the healthiest animals and meat, but they ensure that our farm has a positive impact on our local ecosystem and community.
  • Reconciliation is the center of our spiritual and farm work. In all that we do, we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love.

Our History

Located on land that was originally home to the Lenape people, we strive to be caretakers of what has now been a Mennonite farm for more than 250 years.  The ranch at "Tussock Sedge Farm" as you see it today began with Henry and Charlotte Rosenberger nearly 30 years ago, who dreamed of creating a sustainable farm that restored and improved the local ecology. In addition to preserving land from future development, planting thousands of trees and shrubs, and creating permanent wetlands for various wildlife, they introduced 100% grass fed/grass finished Red Angus cattle, using rotational grazing and homeopathic veterinary care as the basis for how the farm operates. Slowly expanding over time, our pastures and hayfields have increased from around 80 acres in the 1990's, to nearly 1,000 acres today. For a regenerative agriculture, pastured based farm in the suburbs of Philadelphia, this is a lot of land saved from development. We're also focused on supporting other farmers in our area, including providing a long term lease on some of our land for Blooming Glen Farm, an organic CSA style vegetable farm, helping ensure that the local community has access to high quality, nutritionally dense foods for years to come.

Henry and Charlotte’s youngest daughter Tonya, along with husband Sean, manage the overall farm operations, splitting time between work in the field, animal husbandry, mechanical repairs, order fulfillment, and various sales, administrative, and marketing tasks. In their former lives, Tonya was an emergency room and hospice nurse while Sean spent years in the Information Technology field doing project management and website/user interface design. Their four young children ages 11, 9, 7 and 4 follow closely behind on any given day. Operating a cattle based ranch isn't just our job, it's our passion, and this is exactly what God has called us to do. Each and every thing we do is to glorify His name. We both have deep roots of farming in our families, with Tonya's direct ancestors dating back hundreds of years to the original Mennonite settlers of this area, and Sean's family who farmed the red clay of rural Georgia for most of the 20th century. Our hope is that this ranching legacy we continue to build upon will be carried on by our children as they come of age.

Our Values

Our approach is simple….nurture the animals and land while treating it all with the utmost respect. Animals are not meant to be confined to dark buildings with concrete floors. They flourish when raised out on lush green pastures. Cattle and sheep are ruminants by design and should never be fed grain. We have been raising 100% grass fed/grass finished beef for nearly 3 decades, long before it became trendy. During this time, we have fine tuned our process to consistently create beautifully marbled beef instead of the lean product typical of most other grass fed beef.   Pigs are one of the greatest foragers in the animal kingdom and should have their natural behaviors encouraged. Our pastured raised pigs spend their entire life on grass, rolling in mud to stay cool, digging through fields in search of nuts, and actively grazing on green plants like dandelion.  Chickens are omnivores and love to eat bugs, grass and clover. Routine antibiotics and hormones have no place on our farm, just as chemically toxic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, GMO's, soy, and corn are never used. We partner with a small scale, humane certified butcher who focuses on quality over quantity.

We also do not believe in labels or certifications, as these don't tell the whole story and often have plenty of loopholes. Instead, we operate with complete transparency, in plain sight, for everyone to see. Our products reflect our morals and beliefs for how our animals and this land should be cared for. We work with nature, not against it, letting the seasons and the animals guide our daily approach to the highest levels of humane and holistic care. Our animals gain weight much more slowly than typical animals raised in confinement settings, and that's fine with us. Our beef from cattle that are nearly 3 years of age when processed has a depth of flavor and beautiful fine grain marbling that simply can't be rushed. This is not your typical grass fed beef, the majority of which in this country is raised for more than a year less than ours. Beef from cattle that are only 18-20 months of age tends to be very lean with little flavor. That's definitely not the case with beef from our animals that live nearly twice as long. Once you taste the beef we raise, you'll see how "all great things take time".
